Kauai Campground Guide
Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, is one of the best islands in Hawaii for camping. Whether you want to stay near the beach, camp in the mountains, or use a campground as a base for hiking and exploring, there are some really great options around the island.
This guide covers the best legal campgrounds on Kauai in 2026, including county campgrounds, Hawaii state campgrounds, private campgrounds, and backcountry camping options. If you’re planning a campervan trip, tent camping vacation, or just want to know where you can camp legally on Kauai, this page will help you figure it out.
My recommendation is to spend your time in one area of the island at a time instead of constantly driving back and forth. Kauai may look small on the map, but it’s much more enjoyable when you slow down and really explore each area.
West Side Kauai Campgrounds
Kauai has several additional backcountry campgrounds that are managed by the state around Waimea State Park. Click here for more information on additional backcountry campgrounds.

Kawaikoi, Sugi Grove & Waikoali Campgrounds

Camp Sloggett
Kauai, HI • Private Campground
Camp Sloggett is another great base for exploring Kōkee and Waimea State Parks. You briefly go down a dirt road, then arrive at a fantastic and secluded campground.
Guests should bring their own linens, towels, pillows, food, and firewood if needed. Discounts may be available for YWCA members, Hawaii residents, businesses, organizations, and U.S. non-profits.

Lydgate Park
Kauai, HI • County Campground
Just outside of Kapaʻa, Lydgate Park is one of the most developed campgrounds on Kauai.
Anahola Beach Park
Kauai, HI • County Campground
Another simple campground between the parking lot and the beach. It is a nice option, but Kumu Camp at Anahola on the other side may be better for some travelers.
Kumu Camp at Anahola
Anahola, Kauai, HI • Private Campground
Kumu Camp is camper van and rooftop tent friendly. Best private camping options on Kauai.
North Shore Kauai Campgrounds
Anini Beach Park
Kauai, HI • County Campground
The campground is a large lawn area near the beach. Anini Beach is family friendly. Lots of families camp here, and it makes a good base for North Shore activities. Permits can be reserved online.
Camp Naue
North Shore, Kauai, HI • Private Campground
Camp Naue can be a good base for Kalalau Trail access, but booking is limited because group events can reserve the whole space.
Drop-in campers cannot make regular reservations. They may email Camp Naue two weeks in advance to ask if overnight camping is possible.
Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park
Kauai, HI • Backcountry Wilderness Camping
Nāpali Coast is a world-famous backcountry camping destination known for its rugged cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, and remote coastline.
Backcountry Camping on Kauai
Kauai also has some incredible backcountry camping opportunities, but they’re very different from standard beach park or campground stays.
The most famous backcountry camping on Kauai is along the Nā Pali Coast, but there are also more remote mountain and interior camping areas depending on route access and current conditions.
If you’re new to camping on Kauai and just want a relaxing trip, it’s usually easier to stick with a county, state, or private campground first.
FAQ

Types of Kauai Campgrounds
Kauai has four main types of campgrounds, and each one offers a different kind of experience.
County campgrounds are usually beach parks managed by Kauai County. State campgrounds are managed by Hawaii State Parks and often include some of the island’s most scenic places to camp. Private campgrounds are often more comfortable for visitors and usually work better for campervans, rooftop tents, and families. Backcountry camping is more rugged and usually requires permits and more planning.
