Kauai Campgrounds (2026 Guide to Legal Camping)

Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, is one of the best islands in Hawaii for camping. Whether you want to stay near the beach, camp in the mountains, or use a campground as a base for hiking and exploring, there are some really great options around the island.

This guide covers the best legal campgrounds on Kauai in 2026, including county campgrounds, Hawaii state campgrounds, private campgrounds, and backcountry camping options. If you’re planning a campervan trip, tent camping vacation, or just want to know where you can camp legally on Kauai, this page will help you figure it out.

My recommendation is to spend your time in one area of the island at a time instead of constantly driving back and forth. Kauai may look small on the map, but it’s much more enjoyable when you slow down and really explore each area.

Can You Camp Anywhere on Kauai?

No, you cannot legally camp just anywhere on Kauai.

Sleeping overnight on beaches, in parking lots, at trailheads, or inside your vehicle outside of designated campgrounds is not allowed and can result in fines. Kauai does enforce camping rules, and park staff do check.

If you want to camp legally on Kauai, you should stay only at approved county, state, private, or permitted backcountry campsites.

Types of Kauai Campgrounds

Kauai has four main types of campgrounds, and each one offers a different kind of experience.

County campgrounds are usually beach parks managed by Kauai County. State campgrounds are managed by Hawaii State Parks and often include some of the island’s most scenic places to camp. Private campgrounds are often more comfortable for visitors and usually work better for campervans, rooftop tents, and families. Backcountry camping is more rugged and usually requires permits and more planning.

Camping reservations for Hawaii State Parks are available at https://explore.ehawaii.gov.  The new reservation system should be used to reserve State Parks camping locations with check-dates on or after 2/1/2026. For non-State Parks reservations please go to https://camping.ehawaii.gov.

West Side Kauai Campgrounds

Kauai has several additional backcountry campgrounds that are managed by the state around Waimea State Park. Click here for more information on additional backcountry campgrounds.

Polihale State Park Campground

Remote beach camping on Kauai’s dry west side with huge sunsets and easy access to the Nā Pali Coast region. Best for adventurous campers who want scenery over convenience.

Book Polihale Campground

Kokee State Park Campground

A great mountain campground for exploring Waimea Canyon and Kokeʻe State Park. Cooler weather, hiking access, and one of the best west side bases on Kauai.

Book Kokee Campground

KawaikoiSugi Grove & Waikoali

You need a 4×4 to get to these but…they are really really awesome campgrounds located deep in the mountains of Koke’e.

Camp Sloggett (Private Campground)

This is another great base for exploring Koke’e and Waimea State Parks. You have to briefly go down a dirt road, but then you arrive at a fantastic and secluded campground.

Book Camp Sloggett Campground

Salt Pond Park (Kauai County Campground)

A simple campground between parking lot and the beach. Fairly centrally located and the beach is fun for families. It’s a bit of a trade-off: Convenient so it’s not very secluded.

East Side Kauai Campgrounds

Lydgate Park (Kauai County Campground)

Just outside of Kapa’a, this is one of the most developed campgrounds on the island. Camping pads are pretty close together, but it’s nice and on the beach.

Anahola Beach Park (Kauai County Campground)

Another simple campground between the parking lot and the beach. It’s nice, but I prefer Kumu Camp at Anahola on the other side.

Book Anahola Beach Park Campground

Kumu Camp at Anahola (Private Campground)

Kumu Camp is a great campground and right on the beach. They’re also camper van and roof top tent friendly!

North Shore Kauai Campgrounds

Anini Beach Park (Kauai County Campground)

The campground is a large lawn area near the beach. Lots of families camping there and a good base for north shore activities.

Camp Naue north shore kauai

Camp Naue (Private Campground)

Nice campground, but does not allow booking far in advance due to events that can occupy the whole space. If things work out for you it has nice proximity to the Kalalau trail.

Napali Coast State Wilderness Park view

Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park

This is a backcountry camping destination which is world famous for its beauty and due to high demand has special fees and rules. Book 90 days in advance. (Or check it out by boat!)

Backcountry Camping on Kauai

Kauai also has some incredible backcountry camping opportunities, but they’re very different from standard beach park or campground stays.

The most famous backcountry camping on Kauai is along the Nā Pali Coast, but there are also more remote mountain and interior camping areas depending on route access and current conditions.

If you’re new to camping on Kauai and just want a relaxing trip, it’s usually easier to stick with a county, state, or private campground first.
