Kokee State Park Campground

Introduction

Koke’e Campground is one of my favorite campgrounds on the island. Being just off the main road it is easily accessible and is the perfect base for visiting Koke’e State Park. There are great hikes all around. Much of the island runs hot so you’ll really appreciate the cooler temperatures that come with being at an elevation of about 4000 feet. That being said, it can get pretty chilly at night so you’ll want to layer appropriately! Click here to reserve a spot at the campground.

This is one of the most popular campgrounds on the island, so be sure to book early. Permits are required, and each campsite can accommodate 6 persons (except site 1 which can accommodate up to 10). You can set up camp starting at 3pm and need to be out by noon of your last day. The maximum consecutive number of days you can camp at the site is five.

How to Get to Kokee State Park Campground

Drive up Koke‘e Road (Highway 550) about 15 miles north of Kekaha. You will see signs for the campground on your left.

Up ahead is the campground parking lot. You can either set up a tent at one of the campsites to the right, or you can drive through the parking lot onto the dirt road. At the field you could previously camp out anywhere, but officially this is no longer the case.

The campsites come with a picnic table and grill. There are many nice areas to pitch a tent and parking is plentiful.

There is a short trail that leads up to the bathrooms. The bathroom facilities at this campground are fairly well maintained and have running water.  They’re pretty okay for a campground. Toilets and showers are not pretty but certainly adequate.

Like everywhere on the island, you’ll wake up to roosters in the morning!

Best Time to Visit Kokee State Park Campground

Kokee State Park Campground is a year-round destination. That being said, the time of year will affect the conditions you experience there. In general, Kauai’s weather is pleasantly tropical, however, it is also known for its microclimates and that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Kokee campground.

The Sunny Season: May to October

The months from May to October are traditionally the sunniest in Kauai. You’ll find clear skies and milder temperatures averaging around 75°F (24°C) during the day. This period is perfect for hikers and bird watchers as the trails are dry and the native forest birds are active. You can enjoy the colorful spectacle of the ‘I’iwi and ‘Apapane birds without the distraction of rain.

The Cooler Months: November to April

If you prefer cooler weather and don’t mind occasional showers, November through April might be your ideal window. The temperatures during these months can drop to a brisk 45°F (7°C) in the evenings, so packing layers is essential. The cooler weather brings out the lushness of the flora, and the morning mists create an ethereal atmosphere particularly enchanting for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Avoiding the Crowds

July and August can draw more visitors due to summer vacations, as well as December and January because of the holiday season. For a more solitary experience, consider visiting in the shoulder months like September or February when the park is less crowded, and the campground offers a more tranquil atmosphere.

Weather Considerations

It’s important to note that Kokee can be wet – it’s adjacent to one of the wettest spots on earth. Rain can come and go quickly, and misty conditions are not uncommon. While this can add to the park’s mystique, it can also make some trails slippery and challenging. Always check the weather forecast and prepare for changing conditions.

Planning Your Visit

Whenever you decide to visit, it is highly advisable to book your campsite well in advance, especially if you aim for peak season. Additionally, always check the state park’s website for any alerts or closures that may affect your trip.

Kokee State Park Campground Fees and Reservations

Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance and you’ll want to try and hit that window if you’re going during peak seasons which can happen all the time – spring break, summer, winter break. The current fee (Summer 2024) is $30 for non-residents and $20 for local residents. You can reserve a spot on the official Kokee State Park Campground reservation system.

Is Kokee Camground camper van or Roof Top Tent friendly?

No, unfortunately it is not. Previously they were fine with roof top tents or camper vans on the meadow area, but they currently only want you to stay in tents in the designated sites and you are no longer allowed to drive on the meadow area. If you have a 4×4 and are feeling adventurous I would recommend going off road to stay somewhere like Sugi Grove.

Kokee State Park Campground Alternatives

It’s not uncommon to discover that the campground is booked full, especially if you didn’t plan far in advance. In that case, I would recommend that you try and stay at a campground that is close by. Camp Sloggett and Salt Pond are both possibilities. You can find all Kauai’s campgrounds here.

If you’re traveling in a large group you could also consider staying at Camp Hale Koa. They have amazing facilities but you basically need to have at least 35 people to stay there (great for family reunions!)

If you’d prefer to stay in a cabin you can also stay at the Cabins at Kokee. They’re actually right by the campground. Camp Sloggett also has cabins available.

Conclusion

Kokee State Park Campground is the perfect base for visiting Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon. With the right preparation and respect for nature, your camping trip will be an unforgettable adventure. We hope this guide helps you on your journey to discovering the magic of Koke’e. Happy camping!
